Contemporary Thai culture is very tolerant towards diversity, including LGBTQIA+ people. As World Nomads writes, "Very few countries are as welcoming to transgender people as Thailand. It has one of the world’s largest transgender communities, is the biggest destination for gender reassignment surgery on the planet and is a hugely popular tourism destination for transgender people."
But during LGBT Pride Month, we need to acknowledge that Thailand's legal framework for LGBTQIA+ people hasn't kept pace with cultural acceptance. Thailand still does not recognize same-sex marriages, civil unions, domestic partnerships, unregistered cohabitations, or any other form of same-sex unions. We think it's time for that to change. Thai laws should reflect the openness and compassion of our culture.
